Tips On Buying Labrador Puppies

by Pet Care on October 15, 2008

A Labrador puppy is a marvelous addition to your family. If you’re single, a Labrador also makes for an extraordinary companion. They are cute, intelligent, well mannered and very loyal. Despite all these wonderful attributes, it is your responsibility to purchase from someone (a store, a breeder, or a person) who truly cares for the animal. Not only will you be assured of the Labrador puppy’s health but also its quality and its mother’s way of life.

A pure bred Labrador puppy is talented and versatile. The best way to find a pure bred and healthy Labrador puppy is to go to a professional Labrador breeder. Even if you’re not looking for a show dog, or a field dog, a good place to go is to a reputable Labrador breeder.

Good quality Labradors do not come cheap, but steep prices does not indicate value either so you have to be responsible in gathering the right amount of information in order to be an informed buyer.
You have to find Labrador puppy breeders that have the facilities and expertise to properly raise a pure bred dog. They may be a bit pricey than your neighborhood pet shop, but they can save you from heartaches and mounting veterinary care bills.

Technically anyone can be a breeder, as long as they own a female dog and produce a litter and offer them for sale is a breeder. What matters is the knowledge, and care that these breeders invest on their dogs. An indication of a conscientious breeder is their passion and care for the animals. They breed the animals not just for profit but also for a higher cause. The cause is to produce, superbly bred Labradors, with good genetics, healthy well-being and even temperament.

You will see this in the way a breeder selects the parents of a Labrador puppy. Before breeding, a well-informed breeder will pick parents that are even tempered, have good physical attributes, excellent genetics and as far related as possible.
Before going to pet shop, and falling madly in love with a Labrador puppy, do a background check on the pet shop. Ask the pet shop manager, or owner where they get their Labrador puppies. If you have the name of the kennel you can go to the nearest American Kennel Club and ask for reference. You can also go to local kennel clubs, and ask for reputable private breeders. Private breeders consider raising dogs as an art. They are on the quest for the quintessential Labrador puppy that ever existed. So you are assured that you are really getting top quality.

If you know someone you can also go to private dog owners, who cannot afford or do not have the time to take care of their dog’s litter. Use the power of the information age and be conscientious in your search for that Labrador puppy. After all, you probably want the best don’t you?

Labrador puppies are easy to come by. But be diligent in safeguarding yourself and try to stop puppy mills. Purchase Labrador puppy supplies at your nearest pet store.

Understanding Common Boston Terrier Problem Behaviors

by Pet Care on October 15, 2008

When thinking about bringing home any particular breed, you are going to want to make sure that the personality and the problems that may come along with the dog are things that you can handle and get past. And when thinking about the Boston Terrier, you are going to really want to stop and think about what Boston Terrier problem behaviors you are more in likely going to deal with. Making sure that you truly understand what you are going to face will make sure that you do not make the wrong decision.

By putting proper Boston Terrier training into action, you will give yourself a better chance at avoiding some nasty problems but you are never completely safe from everything. Make sure that you check out some local dog obedience classes around your area or stock up on some of the newest in dog training books in order to learn as much as you possibly can. The more knowledge you have, the better your chances are at completely controlling the situation.
Before you go jumping in head first trying to figure out what problems you are going to run across and how you are going to fix them, you first need to truly understand what it is that you are going to be training on. A dog that is never taught to sit will not have problem behaviors towards the sit command. While it is nice that an owner wants to get ready for the typical Boston Terrier problem behaviors, the fact is that not all of the dogs are going to show the same problems.

The best thing to do when trying to prevent or solve behavior problems is to get a good training plan in place and stick with it. Check out some of the dog training books that are in your local library or in the nearest bookstore. Also, if you do end up having a lot of problem behaviors, go ahead and head to a dog obedience class in order to get the problem fixed before it gets out of hand.
Something that needs to be kept in mind is that just because a pup is experiencing some of or a lot of the typical Boston Terrier problem behaviors, does not mean that he or she is a bad dog. It does not mean that they are wrong or that you need to get rid of him or her. It is natural for every dog, no matter the breed, to experience some degree of problem behaviors and it is up to the owner to solve the situation.

Generally speaking, when a dog is always having problems with their behavior, it is the lack of proper training on part of the owner that is the problem and the reason behind it all. And when it comes to this particular breed, it is the potty training that is the biggest problem simply because the Boston Terrier likes to not listen. And since no potty training habits are a bad thing when your floors are concerned, it is important that you are strict and firm with your training.

In order to keep the few problem behaviors you will experience in line, make sure that there is proper Boston Terrier training being given. It is a good idea to always have a few dog training books on hand to make sure that you can curb any Boston Terrier problem behaviors as they may arise.

Solving Siberian Husky Problem Behaviors

by Pet Care on October 15, 2008

When you start getting acquainted with your Siberian Husky you will start to notice that some Siberian Husky problem behaviors may start to rear their ugly heads and they need to be dealt with as soon as possible. Positive reinforcement and consistency is what works with Siberian Husky problem behaviors as the Husky does not respond well at all to punishment but at the same time their intelligence makes them easier to train than some other breeds. Take your time and be consistent and you should be able to train your dog.

The Siberian Husky is an active dog and if you do not give it a set exercise time every day when it can run around then it will eventually just set its own exercise time which can be anywhere it wants and whenever it feels like it. Always set aside exercise time and you can avoid some of the Siberian Husky problem behaviors that other owners seem to come across.
It is important to properly train your Husky for social interaction with other people and animals. A dog that is not socially adapted can develop the Siberian Husky problem behavior of becoming aggressive towards others and very protective of its human family. You need to let your Husky know that social interaction is the acceptable form of behavior and try to train around the natural aggressive urge to be a protector and to not trust strange people or animals.

Your Husky also has the ability to develop a habit of chasing smaller animals and even chasing livestock and in many cases a Husky will kill what it catches and that can be a large problem. Social training and obedience training can help to curb this but there is always that urge so always keep an eye on your Husky at all times and make sure it does not develop the nasty habit of taking off after anything that runs away from it.
Probably the biggest of the Siberian Husky problem behaviors that will make you very unpopular with your neighbors is your Husky’s tendency to howl instead of bark. If you leave your Husky outside in the yard by itself for long periods of time then it could develop the very bad habit of howling and that is high on your neighbors’ list of intolerable. Make sure you curb the howling at a young age and keep the dog indoors as much as possible.

Your Siberian Husky is an extremely intelligent dog and sometimes it likes to use that intelligence to decide that it is going to do what it wants to do and not what you want it to do. The stubbornness of a Husky can take some time to break through but a consistent and steady hand can help you break some of the Siberian Husky problem behaviors that you may encounter and help to create a healthy relationship between you and your dog.

Siberian Husky training and how it can correct problem behaviors is explained in this article. If you need additional information to go with your dog training books then use this article.

Rottweilers: German Bred Working Breed

by Pet Care on October 15, 2008

Rottweilers have existed from time immemorial and are a German bred that were most often used to drive cattle and also act as guard dogs. They are affectionately nicknamed Rottie or Rott. In size, they are big and very strong, weighing over one hundred pounds. Without proper training a Rottweiler can become fiercely independent and it can also be quite domineering. Often, Rottweilers can become veritable bullies and among Rottweiler problem behavior you can also add that they can be hard to manage.

The Rottweiler might not be the right choice for everyone, including the first time dog owner. This breed requires great care and training to become the loyal, protective pets current owners know. In addition to normal behavioral problems, Rottweilers also require an excellent diet and good veterinary care to prevent certain health risks, and often treating their various health problems can prove to be quite costly. So it makes sense to have a health insurance policy for your Rottweiler to take care of these costs.
Rottweiler problem behavior is something that concerns owners who have little children in the home, or elderly people and even those that are not strong enough to withstand the size and strength of the Rottweiler. They also have certain behavioral problems that are not too worrisome because they are nothing worse than trying to bully others, or trying to domineer them. However, Rottweiler training should see them lose these irritating behaviors though their size too is a problem.

A Rottweiler may easily knock you down and inadvertently cause you injuries while displaying one particular Rottweiler problem behavior where it bumps and tries to herd you around. Other than that, there are no major worries regarding their behavior, though they can destroy your expensive possessions, as the Rottweiler loves to chew on everything and anything. You should thus ensure that you give your pet some Rottweiler training and remember also to deal with him in a firm manner if you want to ensure that he remains well behaved and under your control.
Basically, Rottweilers are calm as well as confident and blessed with plenty of courage and are also very self-assured. It all adds up to the fact that there are not really any Rottweiler problem behaviors that will give rise to cause for concern, and whatever problems do arise are more of an individual thing rather than Rottweiler specific related.

It is however necessary to ensure that Rottweiler training is given to your pet, especially if you want to put it in the show ring, and you also need to realize that the best way of overcoming Rottweiler problem behaviors is to give it a lot of care and attention and to impart early training so that it behaves well around not only you, but around other people and also other dogs. In fact, if you put in your time and effort into training your Rottweiler, it will pay you back with a life filled with devotion and loyal companionship.

Rottweilers only need to be given early Rottweiler training after which they will reward their owners by getting over their little Rottweiler problem behavior and become well socialized. Though there are few Rottweiler problem behavior, this article and dog training books should provide you with the required information.

How To Train A Yorkshire Terrier

by Pet Care on October 14, 2008

While Yorkshire Terriers are incredibly intelligent Dogs that will easily learn tricks and such, it is believed that the Yorkshire Terrier is the hardest to housebreak. Housebreaking is probably the first thing that you want to teach your Yorkshire Terrier, and there is a right way and a wrong way to do this.

The first step is to confine your Yorkshire Terrier to a small space or small room, and to establish a place where it is acceptable for him to relieve himself. It is important that you teach your dog this immediately, and keep him confined until he is consistently using the appropriate area for relieving himself. From there, you can start taking him outdoors to relieve himself. Note that Yorkshire Terrier can be litter box trained as well, but it is important to clean out the litter box each day.

Once your Yorkshire Terrier is housebroken, the real fun can begin. Hopefully, during housebreaking he has learned his or her name. Make sure that you use his name often. You should start training him to obey basic commands; such as sit, lay, come, and stay. Work on just one command at a time, per training session.

Realize that these tiny dogs have tiny attention spans and ten or fifteen minutes of training per session, maybe three times a day is sufficient. The important thing is that you work with the dog each and every day. Do not skip days! Within a week or two, your Yorkshire Terrier should be obeying these commands the majority of the time.

Your Yorkshire Terrier associates words with items as well. Give each of his toys a name, and teach him their names. For example, when you throw a ball, you can command him to get the ball. Don’t simply say fetch, and don’t throw the ball without saying anything. Use the command ‘get’ or ‘fetch’ with the word ‘ball.’ Do this with all of his toys, one toy at a time, until you can tell him to fetch a certain toy, and he can pick that specific toy out of a group of other toys.

Other than basic commands, house training, and word association, there are numerous tricks that you can teach your Yorkshire Terrier, such as rolling over, dancing, and shaking hands and such, but more importantly, you need to teach your Yorkshire Terrier good manners.

Remember that he will be living in your home, as a member of your family. He will be there when you have guests as well. Your Yorkie must be taught not to jump up on people, and also be taught to stop barking at your command. He should never be allowed to beg for food while you are eating, to eat off of your plate, or to be hand fed while you are eating. Your Yorkie needs to be able to listen to certain commands so that he can get along with the other people – and animals – in your home. Click here for more Dog Articles

Hints For Finding Practical Bird Fountains And Baths

by Pet Care on October 13, 2008

Of course everyone wants to take great care of their pets and buy them enjoyable products appropriate for the species. But how about those special “guests” that simply visit your yard for a few minutes of refreshment?

Old fashioned concrete bird bath fountains are a great way to attract birds to your backyard as many of them have become accustomed to seeking bird baths to get a drink of water and have a refreshing splash on a hot summer day.

The inviting sound of trickling water that is provided by a fountain design, lets birds know that the water is fresh and safe to drink.

Why a Bird Bath Fountain?

Bird bath fountains are natural and will attract a wide variety of birds to your backyard - like bluebirds, warblers and bobwhites - all of which enjoy moving water. You’ll love watching your backyard birds as they play, splash, bath and drink.

Bird baths also function as garden accents. They draw the eye, focus attention on nearby shrubs or flowers and provide beautiful backyard entertainment.

Why a Fountain Style?

The sound of dripping or splashing water is a guaranteed draw, no matter where you live. So, not only will it attract regular customers to the bath every day, but it will also tempt migrant birds in the spring and fall.

Your backyard will unexpectedly fill with bobwhites, bluebirds, mourning doves, cedar waxwings and more as your bubbling, backyard spring attracts passers-by. Overall, running water tends to be more effective at attracting birds.

Keep it Shallow

Most birds aren’t long-distance swimmers and they prefer a shallow level of water, no higher than an inch. So, keep the water level in your fountain low and place a few rocks around and inside the fountain to act as footing for smaller birds.

Get a Grip

Just as we don’t like stepping into a slippery bath tub, birds are hesitant about slippery surfaces like glass tile or glazed pottery, no matter how beautiful it is. Instead of spending the money, opt for a grip-safe fountain surface like concrete or sandstone.

Stay Low to the Ground

In nature, you won’t find natural water at waist height, unless it’s falling over a cliff. Water pools at ground level, and that’s the first place birds will look for it. So, keep your bird bath close to the ground and surrounded by natural elements such as shrubbery.

The Best Fountain Designs

The optimal design for bird bath fountains are double-tiered basins with a constantly flowing water source set low to the ground. The running fountain attracts birds, and the ground level is appealing. To make your bird visitors feel safe, camouflage the area with a few plants and natural elements.

The Mastiff Dog : What I Feed Mine

by Pet Care on October 13, 2008

I am going to tell you about the mastiff dog breed and what make Charlie for dinner. As you can imagine Charlie is my mastiff. He is an English Mastiff. There are quite a few breeds out there which have their own characteristicsbut I stopped at Charlie. He is of the dark fawn-brindle ( flecked in browns) persuasion and of average size and weight(32 inches tall and nearing 190 lbs).

Food For Mastiffs

, let me tell you all that I have heard success stories will all different types of diets for mastiffs from Iams to Purina but this is what I feed mine and it has done Charlie wonders. I got this recipe from a friend of the family that had an English Mastiff for as long as I have known him and his have always seemed full of energy an blissful . Well full of energy for a mastiff that is.

I started feeding Charlie puppy kibble and it seemed to be doing just fine but once he became a teen he started looking like he needed a little more. I tried just feeding him more kibble at the beginning but he still seemed skinny and a little sleepy. That’s when I started feeding him what he eats now and it has worked.

English Mastiffs

I main ingredients are ground turkey, brown rice and raw veggies. Mainly carrots broccoli and cauliflower. I cook a half pound of ground turkey till tis done and add about half a cup of cooked brown rice. I chop up about a cups worth of vegetables until they are small enough to where I wouldn’t need to cut them if I ate them. I mix them all together and serve it to him after it cools. I also place his bowl on a stool so he doesn’t have to bend over to eat. He eats everything to the last drop .

I do this two times a day once for breakfast and once for dinner. I have made multiple days worth meals and saved them in the fridge and that seems to work just fine too. One thing i have never done is made tons and frozen it and fed it to him over a week or two but I can only assume that would work too and maybe even be cheaper seeing as how you could do it in bulk.

Mastiffs

He came around fast . You could see Charlie changing and within a month or so he had a shinier coat and more energy. He even started putting on some lean muscle weight. Charlie is now a very blissful English Mastiff he has energy I have a friend that has an American Bandogge Mastiff and he loves this diet too so I can only imagine that every type of the mastiff dog breed would too. I love this breed and i love my good ole dog so I hope you try this diet for a while and see of it makes your dog as blissful and healthy as mine.

What Do I Need To Know About Dog Insurance?

by Pet Care on October 13, 2008

I can almost bet that 90% of you reading this right now did not know that you can purchase insurance for your dog. Alot of people did not know this, but its just like shopping for insurance for yourself in that you will need to shop for coverage and the best possible price.

To help you understand to points of interest associated with shopping for dog health insurance, we have a few tips which can help the selection process to become slightly easier for you.

1. Find out if the insurance company covers any pre-existing health conditions. This is very important because should your dog become ill or have an injury that stemmed from a previous condition, and the insurance company does not cover pre-existing health problems, you may be paying the expense out of your pocket.

2) You will also need to know whether the insurance carrier is actually licensed in your particular locale. Since every single area generally tends to have its own insurance regulations, making sure that the company is licensed in your area just means that they know and understand your and your dog’s rights when it comes to proper dog health coverage.

3. Find out exactly how long the insurance company has been in business and how long they have been dealing in pet insurance. Typically newer insurance companies are not as experienced and don’t have the lowest rates.

4) Be sure to ask what things that the insurance policy will not cover. This is an important part of the selection process as the last thing you or anyone would want to happen is to have to take your dog in for something just to find out that it is not covered and that you will have to pay cash for it.

Make sure you thoroughly check through the coverage that the company provides. Make sure they cover medications, CAT scans, bone scans etc. Just make sure you know what type of coverage you are receiving.
