Pregnant Dogs: Is My Dog Pregnant?

by Pet Care on November 24, 2008

Unsure if your pet is pregnant? Of course the easiest thing to do is to take your dog to the Veterinarian. The veterinarian have a few options available to them to determine if your pet is pregnant. Ultrasound is the most reliable since the doctor can actually see if there are any puppies. Depending on how far along the vet may be able to feel, the dog’s uterus to determine pregnancy. This is not something pet owners should try because you do not want to damage any puppies. The other thing the vet might try is a blood test. Or your doctor might decide to do an x-ray on the animal. One big advantage about talking the dog to the vet is that he may be able to give you a better idea about when the puppies will be born.

How to Tell if Your Dog is Pregnant - Some indicators.

There are signs that a pet owner can watch that are good early detection signs that your dog is pregnant. Many dogs lose their appetite during the first few weeks. They may sleep a lot more during this time. Another good indication is swollen nipples. A dog that is not pregnant will normally have small flat nipples. A pregnant dog’s nipples will start to swell. You might also see that there is a color change.

Some dogs will even display behaviour changes. They may want to be left alone. This is normal. Try not to be concerned. Or your dog might become overly affectionate. They might want to be with you all the time.
Once you have determined that your dog is pregnant a trip to the vet is recommended. They can offer advice about diet and address any pre-natal treatments that your dog may require.

Now all you can do is wait. If you are wondering how long are dogs pregnant - the normal length of pregnancy is between 54 and 72 days depending on the breed. Congratulations, you are having puppies.

My Pet Caught On Nanny Cam

by Pet Care on November 23, 2008

I’ve been contemplating the purchase of a nanny cam in order to keep an eye on my cat. She often goes to play in the next room while I work in my home office. When she goes quiet, I can’t be sure if she has curled up in a sleepy ball or if she’s chewing on my network cables. Oh, yes: many a time I’ve had a sudden drop-out and spent an hour pinging the DNS provider and reconfiguring my router, only to find that my precious darling had sliced clean through the Ethernet cable with her sharp little teeth.

I rarely see her doing it, but I don’t have to catch her on camera in order to know it was her. The evidence is plain. There are sporadic toothmarks all along the cable, and at one point there’s a whole patch of them where the sleeve gets frayed, until I can finally see the bare gleam of copper where my cat has cut the Cat-5. That’s what the cable is called, n00bs. The full name is Category 5 Ethernet Cable, shortened to Cat-5. No wonder the cat enjoys gnawing on it. Actually, I do wonder why she doesn’t prefer to gnaw on something more natural, such as the soft leather tongue of a shoe or the fuzzy terry-cloth belt of my bathrobe. What is it about Cat-5 cable that so appeals to my cat? It must resemble something in nature that cats like to chew on, but what? A delicious snake? A beanstalk?

I want to get a wireless nanny cam with a live feed to my computer desktop. I could have a window open in a corner of the screen while I’m working in the center. I can just see myself typing away in one window on some HTML, then I click over to the other window and there’s my cat looking cute on camera. Now that’s what I call multitasking!

Need More Advice About London Dog Walking

by Pet Care on November 23, 2008

Caring for a dog and sharing time together can be very rewarding, but before you rush out to buy that cute looking puppy with the oversized eyes that is looking longingly back into your eyes, what guidelines should you be aware of? What steps are you going to need to take to ensure that you and the dog have a long and happy life together?

Assuming that you are capable of enduring the initial toilet training and the basics of dog behaviour, what are the main factors of sharing a happy life together with your new found best friend? Well, here are a few suggestions!

First, training. You must train the dog, either yourself, under the supervision of a dog trainer or pass the dog to a dog trainer for a sympathetic training style. This might sound cruel at first, but you at least need to have your pet trained in the basics. For example, if it’s a large dog then you might not want it jumping up onto your furniture and likewise you probably don’t want it to jump it and greet nervous visitors with a lick across the face.

Other essential basics include recall. When you are out walking your dog in open space, he must be able to respond to a basic command to return to you. This might be when he has seen another dog to play with, an animal to chase or because he has just stepped onto the road as a car is approaching. Recall can save you having to hunt for your lost dog, it might even save its life.

Second is feeding. Many dogs do actually become over fed through too much nourishment and too little exercise. Take the situation in hand at the start and provide a suitable amount of quality food. Limit treats to just occasional treats.

Along side feeding, plenty of exercise is also needed to keep them fit and healthy. This is where many people struggle with their busy life styles and cannot find the required time each day to allow their dogs to exercise freely. Walks on the lead at night do at least give them the basic exercise, but dog also need time off their leads in open spaces where they are free to roam and play with other dogs. In winter, this might seem impossible due to your working hours, but many services have sprung up to assist here, such as the London Dog Walker. Here they will collect your pet from your house, take it for a walk in a local park and a play with some of its friends and then return it home to you.

London dog walking isn’t unique, it happens in many cities and can be a great relief for the owner to know the pet is being cared for, whilst great for the pet as it allowed out of the house for a play. Well worth considering!

Feed your dog well, be the boss and train it and make sure it is well exercised. It’s the start to a health relationship with man’s best friend and you!

Dog Training Classes - Who To Hire And Who Not To Hire

by Pet Care on November 23, 2008

It was a breezy summer evening when approximately 12 dogs from various breeds were all assembled in a small group at a local city park in San Diego, California. At each dog’s side, its owner stood by, attentively listening to the dog training instructor whom was in the middle of the group

“Today’s lesson will teach you how to give your dog the “Down” command.” He went on to say: “Now with your dog sitting by your side, and with a little bit of slack on the leash, loudly say the word ‘Down’ and then step on the leash hard so that your dog is forced to the ground and knows exactly what the down command means. This will show your dog that you are in charge and capable of making him go down whether he likes it or not.”

Like mindless listeners, the entire class obeyed the lesson and literally crammed the heads of their dogs down into the ground by stepping on the leash. By the time the entire training session had ended, it seemed like every “down” command ended in shrieks and moans from every dog. There was mass hysteria while the toy dog breeds fought off the leash and collar and the larger dogs just got confused, not understanding the forcefulness of the lesson.

Any dogs that rebelled against their owners and the leash in the attempt to force them down were asked why the instructor to stay behind for some “special handling”. This special handling only turned out to be a much more aggressive counter-lesson with a rolled up fist and an aggressive action towards the dog.

Is This Worth Saving A Few Dollars?

The above story is an all to common practice unfortunately all over the country. Anyone that reads manuals, books, watches videos and dvd’s on dog training, and research can seem to feel themselves qualified to be a trainer. This is not always so. A good trainer is someone who has more than a laman’s knowledge of dog behavior and training.

If your interested their are some great deals on Dog supplies, dog dress and dog sweaters.

Finding the right trainer for your 4-legged friend is worth the extra effort! Being a good trainer does not mean being an egomaniac or someone that regards training as a business instead of an educator! It is like the old saying, anyone can teach but not everyone is a teacher! You would not let just anyone be responsible for teaching your children in school and that is why teachers must go to school and receive a teacher’s license based on their necessary degree.

So with that in mind, not everyone that professes to be a dog trainer is an actual dog trainer! Hiring a quality trainer is a financial investment but that financial investment should be with someone who has the qualifications to back up their methods! A good trainer will be knowledegable about breeds, their abilities, use modern positive training methods, and will create a positive learning environment for both you and your dog!

Be cautious and do your homework! Ask questions and references. Also you want to know how many dogs they have trained and successfully trained and what methods they use.

Are You Sending Mixed Signals to your Dog

by Pet Care on November 22, 2008

Consistency is the key to house training a dog. This not only applies to you but rather to everyone in the household.

Everybody in the house has to treat the dog the same way. If you are trying to teach the dog not to jump up when someone comes in, everybody has to work together. Everyone must use the same techniques and use the same command words. It is important that everyone turns their back to the dog and ignores him the moment he starts jumping. Tell the dog to sit. Once he has settled down, praise the dog. Unfortunately this will only work if everybody follows this. If just one person allows the dog to jump on him or her then the poor dog is getting mixed signals. And it will take a lot longer to train the animal.

Glass Aquarium Information

by Pet Care on November 22, 2008

If you have finally decided on having an glass aquarium in your home, it may not just be as simple as taking any set-up available and buying it. It will take a bit of planning and preparation. There are many factors involved in choosing the right aquarium in your home. Here are just a few.

Aquarium Type
When you come to know a bit more about a all glass aquarium, you realize that there are certain types available. Bear in mind that aquariums seek to recreate a certain kind of environment for certain types of fishes to live in. The type of aquarium that you wish to set up will depend on the type of fish that you wish to keep.

There’s the temperate aquarium for you that may house local fishes since it seeks to recreate a more natural environment found in your own area. But if you wish to care for more exotic fish from other locations, then you might have to set up a tropical aquarium with a different set of equipment in order to recreate a certain tropical environment.

Aquarium Size

Going through the pet stores specializing in aquarium fish, you might notice that there are a variety of aquarium sizes available. You can have your choice of the smallest ones to even the special extra large ones. The type you ultimately choose will depend on the availability of space in your home.

It would be mistake buying a large all glass aquarium and later on realize that it won’t fit through your door. You should first give some time to taking up certain measurement around your home so that it will help you decide on the aquarium size to buy.

Make sure that you have the space available for the type of aquarium you have in mind otherwise you may find it even more difficult in looking for other places in your home where the aquarium will fit. A definite size and location will help make things easier for you.

Aquarium Location

Where in the home will the aquarium end up will also be important in choosing the right aquarium. Always remember that considering the size of an aquarium also means considering its weight. An aquarium tank full of water can be very heavy and large tanks may not be suitable if you wish to place it somewhere on the second floor of your home. Decide on a more desired location.

Make sure that you plan to have your aquarium set up at a chosen location for a long time. Not being sure of your decision can leave you with a difficult problem of moving a heavy aquarium filled with water.

What Kind Of Natural Dog Food Do You Give Your Beloved Dog?

by Pet Care on November 21, 2008

Do you know about Dynamite® for dogs? If you believe what you hear on the radio, you might think that there is nothing better to feed your dogs. Our experience is that it is absolutely awesome, and for our dogs, it is “what’s for dinner,” but there are better ways. We know what they are, and you should know about them too.

In a perfect world, everyone would like to give their dogs the VERY best complete dog diet there is. I hope this is true for you. If so, here is some background you should know:

Don’t believe the myth that dogs are “carnivores.” Dogs are not carnivores – they are omnivores. To be healthy, they MUST eat both meat and plants. But, the primary way they get those veggies in nature has created some confusion and misinterpretations.

If you get to watch a wolf or coyotte, or other wild dog make a natural kill, you will see that they go right for the stomach, and the contents thereof. In a healthy herbivore, the stomach is full of partially digested vegetables. For the dog having dinner, this is the “salad” before the meat and bone entree. This is how they get needed plant-based vitamins, minerals and phytochemicals. It only appears that they are just eating meat.

If they were to ONLY eat the flesh of animals they would quickly become ill and they would ultimately die from either nutritional deficiency or from acidosis. We all know they eat the flesh AND BONES—together, if the animal is small enough. If it is a larger animal, the bone is chewed and swallowed a little later, but it isn’t because they are out of meat—it is critical to the proper utilization of the flesh. The flesh is an ACID ASH food, and it must be neutralized with about four times as much ALKALINIZING bone and vegetables in order to maintain the healthy balance of 20% acid, 80% alkaline.

If you are interested in learning more about all this, pick up a copy of Dr. Ian Billinghurst’s books on the B.A.R.F. diet, or “Give Your Dog A Bone.”

recently I have read that, for the “real” Billinghurst raw food diet, you need to be sure to get the original books that he wrote. Some reviews of his recent books say that he sold out to the processed food industry. personally, I doubt it, but I have not read his recent books. I would guess that Dr. Billinghurst has come to accept the reality that very few people are taking the time to feed their dogs a healthy raw diet. We have observed that few will even take the time to feed their FAMILIES a raw diet, even after they understand how much difference it would make to their health. THIS FACT is why the Dynamite® for dogs is so relevant to the health of your dog.

The value of the Dynamite® for dogs is that it is a quick-feed, out-of-the-bag highly nutritious kibble that is toxin-free, unlike most ready-to-serve foods. The ingredients are very carefully selected and controlled to assure that the caninicide caused by the mainstream dog food companies are never a factor when feeding any Dynamite product. The food is manufactured in a plant that never allows any preservatives or toxins into the building, let alone into the food.

But, even Dynamite® for dogs was not good enough for the owners of Dynamite. They dreamed of creating a dog food that was a ready-made, easy-to-feed Biologically Appropriate RAW Food diet. This past year they finally got it all together, and they are now producing the new “Dynamite Ultimate Diet for Dogs” — a raw extruded meat and vegetable dog food that is dried into a fine meal. It actually uses fresh-killed whole beef – not “beef by-products.”

The aspect of this new food that is not perfect is that it isn’t ready to just pour out of the bag and leave as food. It is a very dry extruded “meal” that needs to be recombined with about 4 parts water, then stirred and soaked before feeding, and it is BEST when mixed with fresh, raw LIVE vegetables that have been liquefied with water in a Vita-Mix (carrots, spinach, beets, left-over green salad, green beans, etc.). Because of this, most people with busy schedules still prefer to feed the Dynamite® for dogs – a ready-to-feed kibble that can be poured and served—hassle free AND with a clear conscience.

Although Dynamite® for dogs might be only the third-best complete dog diet, it still beats out all of its commercial competitors! We only know of the one commercial food that is better, and it is made by the same company …

To summarize regarding dog health care, keep your dog physically active, feed him a nutritional diet and take him to your veterinarian on a yearly basis for a physical examination.
