Most first time pet owners cannot figure out how to deal with their dogs. They are thoroughly confused about dealing with their dogs barking and improper behavior. A lot of them resort to yelling at their dogs and feel that is the right way to handle things. So if you are a first time pet owner and don’t know whether yelling is the thing to do, read on. You can pick any random book on dog behavior and training and it will tell you that yelling never solves a problem. A young puppy will not stop his behavior just because you yell at him and even if he does it will be due to negative reinforcement. View these cheap dog clothes for your doggie.
Yelling usually serves as a quick fix solution which is forgotten by your dog the next minute. It does nothing to modify your dog’s behavior in the long term. So even if your dog does stop doing something because of your yelling you can be sure he will be right back at it shortly.
When you bring a new puppy into your home he starts looking at you as a pack member. So when you yell at him he feels that you are as excited as he is about something. This just adds to his excitement and he continues with his behavior. Even if you do successfully manage to stop your dog by yelling at him there will be far fetched behavioral repercussions of this on your dog’s psychology. Every time you yell at him he will feel that you are doing this because you dislike him. He will fail to realize that you are just trying to get him to follow a rule.
Even though yelling should be avoided it certainly doesn’t mean that you should always use a loving soothing tone with your dog. Of course there will be times when the loving tone is called for and then there will also be times when you will need to be firm and commanding with him. Here are the three basic tones that you can use with your dog to get your point across
The Gentle Tone: this should be the tone that you use to calm him down and relax him. It should be a calm and soothing tone which conveys love and affection. You can use this tone to praise your puppy and to make him feel secure. Eventually he will start associating this tone with your happiness with him and it will give him a sense of belonging.
The Command tone: this tone should be used to give normal commands. It should convey to your dog that you expect him to follow. This tone should be direct, commanding and firm enough to get your puppies attention. Another great way to train your dog is with dog crate training. The Firm Tone: This tone should be used when you want to get your dog to stop doing something immediately. This should be a disciplinary tone but be careful to not turn it into yelling. You can use command such as “down boy” or a simple firm “no” used with his name. This tone should tell your dog that you are displeased with him and you expect immediate obedience. However you should try not to scare him by yelling at him.
