Some Reasons for Grooming Your Pet

by Pet Care on March 28, 2009

Good grooming practices are essential for maintaining health and happiness for you and your dog.
Healthy skin, hair, nails and teeth are what define a well-groomed dog. Pet grooming is the practice of caring for the appearance of a canine for personal or showing purposes. Dog-grooming rituals include washing, hair clipping and cutting, nail clipping, powdering, hair styling and teeth cleaning. Grooming is important for your pet and is aesthetically pleasing to owners. It helps cut down on shedding and smelling, but will also lead to healthy skin, hair, nails and teeth for your dog. Grooming is also a great way to cut down on allergies and infections for both pets and their owners.
Grooming is sometimes difficult. Cleaning, brushing and clipping your dog while also trying to keep them calm can be a challenge for any dog owner. However, sometimes a good set of grooming tools can make the job much easier. Look into a good dog brush that thoroughly brushes as well as trims out excess hair. This will help you get to tasks done at once. If you don’t feel up to Grooming your pets yourself, there are hundreds of dog groomers who would love to pamper your pooch for an afternoon.

But it’s better to do and do your own pet grooming. This is a great way to bond with your pet as well, and if they like the whole grooming thing then they’ll be your slave every time you even bring up mention of the words pet grooming.
It is a special bonding time between you and your dog. You can also use this time to check your dog’s health. Look carefully for signs of fleas, ticks, skin irritations, lumps or painful spots. Check your dog’s eyes, ears and teeth regularly. Consult your veterinarian if you find anything unusual or concerning. It’s important to get him used to it from an early age. Many dogs learn to see their routine brushing as an alternate petting, another source of affection and attention. A good quality Pet brush and comb will help you with your dog’s coat, but also remember that your dog’s eyes, ears, and nails require attention as well.
The main reasons for daily grooming include:
• Enhanced health of the skin and coat
• Reduces the chance of various health problems such as thrush, scratches, and other skin problems
• Make the dog hygienic
• Allows the groomer to check the dog’s health, such as looking for cuts, heat, swelling, lameness, or a change in temperament (such as depression) which could indicate the dog is sick
• And the important reason is it helps to form a relationship between dog and owner

Dog Food - The Choices

by Pet Care on January 12, 2009

Whether your dog is a fussy eater or not, making homemade dog food for him is one of the healthiest things that you can do. Of course, it is easier to make dog food for your dog if he isn’t a fussy eater. Otherwise, you will probably have to go through a trial and error period where you prepare batches and batches of homemade dog food until you find a recipe that he will actually eat.

Making your own homemade dog food with this recipe is easy and will give your dog the best all natural dog foods available. Just remember that in the wild your dog would catch small prey and eat the whole thing. This consisted of the meat, bones, organs, even the heart, brain and eyes (which are high in taurine). The vegetables they would get were in the stomach and digestive tract of the animals already partially digested. If you make your all natural dog foods to imitate your dogs prey hey will enjoy optimum health and love you for it.

Meats need to be fed one animal at a time. In the wild your dog would not eat more than one kind of meat at once. The meat should be ground or served in chunks which are easier to eat. Larger pieces will cause your dog to hold them with their feet to rip the meat apart, which can get messy.

Do not feed any fat that has been cooked which can lead to problems with your dog’s pancreas. Remember in the wild your dog would only get the fat that was on the animal and eaten raw. Use the skin that comes on the meat of in the case of beef the fat riddled throughout the meat.

Meats that cause trichinosis should never be fed like pork, bear, seal, ground squirrels, etc. However specialty meats like moose, ox, venison or bison are very pure and nutrient dense and can be fed in smaller quantities occasionally. Soft boiled eggs are also a good protein source, feed shells and all.

Using these simple guidelines you can make your dog the best all natural dog foods from your own homemade dog food recipe so your dog can enjoy optimum health. Your dog will love you for it Premium Dog Food.

The Complete Home Veterinary Guide

If you have read some of my prior published articles on Pets and guidelines for Pet care, you will find the information not only from my very own real experiences, but valuable tips and guidelines as a Pet owner.

As I have mentioned in prior articles, Ive visited many countries, where ever my work would take me, primarily Asia. I have learned and experienced many cultures, and now live in Northern Thailand , surrounded by jungle. All the creatures you can possibly imagine, something like living on Discovery Channel, but with real life daily experiences, with cobras, eagles, exotic jungle birds, the works.

Are you worried that your dog doesn’t get enough exercise because of a weight problem and does he just sit around all day like a couch potato? Hey, lets face it, pets are overweight, especially dogs. According to experts, of the 41 million pet dogs in this country, about 17 million are either overweight or obese. Pet treadmills are great for simulating the outdoor setting that many pet owners would like to provide their dogs, but cannot, for whatever reason. Depending on your dogs level of energy and enthusiasm you can let him walk or jog at a speed they are comfortable with.

Walking your dog on a regular basis is a win-win solution to both your general health and that of your best friend. Walking your dog is a nice way to get fit and also to enjoy the day by just walking around. Walking with your dog is a good way to start out, as it puts the least amount of stress on both your systems, especially if you’re both just starting out. However once you’ve been walking with your dog for a month or so, his conditioning may improve to the point where he needs a bit more.

Dog exercise also depends on his energy level and his personality, be sure and allow interaction with other dogs if you and the other owner are comfortable with that. Dogs that have been well socialized with other dogs from an early age are less likely to fight.

An added benefit to regular exercise is helping you and your dog to form a strong bond. Training and exercise promote a bond with your pet that there is no equal to. Dogs in general want desperately to please their masters and enjoy performing well in a training situation. Besides the training aspect, playing games is a very good way to get exercise and have fun with them at the same time. Throwing a frisbee across a field or any other way to cause movement will benefit your pet. There are even indoor things you can do for exercise such as throwing a dog toy to be retrieved and brought back to you. Play tug of war with an old sock or even hide a treat of some kind for him or her to find. All good fun.

If you do have the time, there are many dog competitions that you and your dog can become a part of. Dog sledding, sport hunting or herding competitions, lure coursing, fly tracking and obedience competitions. All involve movement and all require lots of exercise.
